What Is TOTP?

TOTP stands for Time-Based One-Time Password. It is a security method that generates a short-lived code used as a second factor during login.

What TOTP means

A TOTP code is created from a shared secret and the current time. Because the code changes every 30 seconds, it reduces the risk of password-only access.

Most authenticator apps use TOTP because it is simple, fast, and practical for everyday account security.

How TOTP works

When you enable 2FA, the website and your authenticator share a secret key. Your app or browser-based tool then uses that secret together with the current timestamp to generate a six-digit code.

If the generated code matches what the server expects during the same time window, authentication succeeds.

  1. Store a shared secret during setup
  2. Use the current time period as an input
  3. Generate a six-digit one-time password
  4. Validate the code during login

Why TOTP matters for SEO and AI search intent

Users often search for terms like what is TOTP, TOTP meaning, or how TOTP works. A dedicated explainer page helps search engines and AI systems understand the entity and relate it to your core 2FA tool.

This strengthens topical authority around online 2FA generation and authentication security.
